Description of Presentation:

This presentation discusses and demonstrates a variety of body image interventions to be used in individual and group therapy settings. Six areas of healing will be introduced, including exposures, media literacy, fat acceptance/HAES, underlying issues, activism, and positive body image heritage. The interventions and concepts come from a variety of sources, including Anita Johnson, Margo Maine, Lindo Bacon, and the presenter’s own experience. Recent research presented will include studies on social media (Hogue & Mills, 2019 and Mills, et al., 2018) and social comparison (Vimalakanthan, et al., 2018). Interventions presented will use a variety of different approaches to learning, including experiential, cognitive-behavioral, audio-visual, drawing, quizzes, and metaphor.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe positive body image. 2. Apply body image interventions discussed in this presentation. 3. Describe concepts of media literacy, fat acceptance, and positive body image heritage.

Training For:

Staff of Hospitals, Medical Centers, Mental Health Clinics, General Medicine Physicians, Psychiatrists, APRN’s, Psychologists, Counselors, Dietitians, Nurses, Substance Abuse Counselors, Mental Health Technicians for all levels including introductory to advanced.
